Hello *|FNAME|*,

In January, Susan and I returned to Rwanda.  We were fortunate to be there on Heroes Day, an annual event that pays tribute to all those who exemplified the highest values of patriotism and sacrifice for the well-being of the country.  We celebrated the awarding of EMA certificates with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Rwanda, Prof. Sam Rugege, and we met many new students from both the Judiciary and the Rwanda Bar Association.

In February we traveled to Lima, Peru with the Weinstein International Foundation, where we discussed best practices and the application of mediation on conflicts across Latin America and the Caribbean region.

We hope to see you at upcoming events throughout the spring, and if you are a member, we hope you join this month's webinar when we will be playing the game, "Stump the Mediator: Overcoming Obstacles to Mediation."  Look for a separate email with the invitation & registration information.

Best,

Bruce, Susan and the EMA team

Heroes and Capes
On March 18, 1997, 3 years after the Rwandan genocide officially ended, the Interahamwe militia from the Democratic Republic of Congo entered the Nyange Secondary School in western Rwanda as part of their murderous rampage and ordered the students to separate, Tutsi on the left and Hutu on the right. The students replied that there were no Hutu or Tutsi, they were all Rwandans. The Interahamwe, angered by the response, left the building but not before killing six students and injuring many others. In refusing to separate by ethnic divisions, the students became iconic heroes and a symbol for future generations seeking a unified Rwanda.
